July 9th 2011 - Upper Wenatchee (State Park Boat Launch to Dan's River Road Property) - Dan
Saturday morning and great weather in the Plain/Lake Wenatchee area around 80 degrees and clear. We had about 10-12 people camp overnight. After cooking some breakfast at camp we loaded up all the boats and gear into a few cars and headed up to Wenatchee state park. When we got there, a group of about 25 had just finished inflating their rafts and started floating down the river. Now that parking in a state park costs $10/vehicle, we need to find a new in point. The river was flowing at around 9000 CFM so we were a little concerned but with the high water, most obstacles were underwater it was just moving faster. Once we got on the river, we realized 9000 CFM was nothing to worry about. If anything, the river was smoother especially near the lake. Eventually we caught up with the other group at the lunch spot on the sandy area where the Chiwawa river feeds into the Wenatchee but we must have scared them away because they left as soon as we got there. The rest of the float was great and we even managed to guide the flotilla into the rock dam we had made at the out point.

We got to the state park around 10:30am, some of the group was already there and a few were still on their way. The river was running higher than normal do to the recent hot days we've had since the 5th of July. The weather was perfect for the float; I think it ended up getting into the high 80's on the river.
Some of the crew went to locate the out; we weren't super happy with the out at the railroad bridge and figured it would be even harder with the high water on the river. It took them a while but they found a nice out a little farther down past the railroad bridge. One of these days we'll either start really early and make it from the State Park to the Tumwater campground or maybe we'll start at the bridge in Plain and go from there. While waiting for the cars to be shuttled 2 other large groups showed up and hit the river before us, we knew with this many people headed out it was going to be a fun day. The float went good, it was uneventful which is usually a good thing when beerfloating on a river. We had a few leaks pop up in some rafts, we tried to stop at a beach but not everyone made it over so we ended up hopping back in and continuing on. There's some interesting cabins on this river, one is built like a castle and actually has a draw bridge for its boat launch. There aren't many rapids on it however the Wenatchee does have a lot of debris and strainers, etc. on the sides of it, it's all easy to avoid but you need to be aware of it. Ate the end of the trip just before the out, our newbie Ryan and his buddy popped there raft and had to get out early. I'm still not exactly sure what happened, I know they lost some stuff to the river some was recovered but the river takes what the river wants. Cassie drove up the road to go and pick them up. That was nice of her.

The weather turned out good for the float, in the 70's and sunny. There was a little wind now and then but it wasn't any issue. The river was running low, probably the lowest we've seen it which caused some minor issues now and then but nothing major. We had a lot of the normal crew on the float with quite a few friends or friends and also some new comers to Washington, Jay, Andi and their dog Racer. Beerfloat.org met Jay and Andi on the June 12th float; they were kayaking and hooked up for some beers. They enjoyed floating with us so much they came back with a raft for this one. The common theme on the river this trip seemed to be bubbles, and lots of them. At one point some of us were down river and the air right above the river was totally full of bubbles going downstream, it looked really cool. I don't think this was organized I think everyone just decided bubbles on the river would be cool, and it was. Because of the low water and some newbies there was a little bit of drama on the river, not a lot but a little. Not sure how but a raft did go upside down and some stuff went floating down the river. We were able to retrieve some of it for them, but not all. The river takes what it wants too.

The in-point on Teanaway river under the HWY 10 bridge just before it flows into the Yakima was higher and flowing faster than we’d ever seen it. We considered cancelling the float not knowing if the Yakima might be the same way. Looking out past the Teanaway to the Yakima, the river seemed OK so we went for it. Turned out, the Yakima flow was unusually low and we were scraping over exposed rocks and low spots in some places. We had 2 inflatable kayakers and a dog from Rill Adventures tie on to us for a while. They were from out of state and were probably expecting more of an adventure from the river but our group probably kept them entertained. At party island, Jason Bender reached into the water and pulled out a 14” trout with his bare hands. He threw it down river before anyone could snap a picture. In that case, it was more like 20 inches or more. I cracked open a bottle of Cooks Brut Champagne at the halfway point and not coincidentally, that is the last thing I remember. I’ve been told the rest of the float was great.

July 3rd 2009 - Upper Wenatchee (Parkside to railroad bridge) - Justin

We met at 10am at Parkside Grocery and left for scouting out the river IN & OUT. The weather was clear, sunny and HOT. I met a guy named Dave the day before that works at Plain Hardware and he was doing the run to Plain in the morning so we stopped in to talk with him and see how it went. All was good from Dave so we knew we were at least going to float to Plain, that would only be about 3 hours so we went down river some more to find another out. We found a great OUT 3.5 miles south of Plain at the railroad bridge, it was perfect had parking and calm waters and was a great landmark for us. We packed in to 2 cars and headed back up to the IN. The IN was small and full of mosquitoes. Next time we will actually get in at the State park lake boat launch and float over to the river beginning, it will add another 10 minutes to the run and should be fun. The boat launch area is big and has parking, etc. The float was pretty mellow, we only saw a few other people on the river. Not many rapids until the end of the run and they were pretty small. The temp was in the low 90's so it was perfect for a lazy float on a cold river. Next time we may try to make it all the way to Tumwater since to the railroad bridge only added another hour I think Tumwater will add an additional hour and a half which should be doable. We were told Lake to Tumwater would be about 7 hours, I think it will be 5.5 to 6 hours. Since this was an exploratory float we had a small nimble group, Justin, Dan, Chris E., Shane, Jason B., Brian C. and Ashley, the river Guy is at Disney Land and couldn't make this trip. I've been wanting to float this river for years, I'm very happy that it worked out well and the whole crew is looking forward to doing it again.
